All My Sons
Characters
- Joe Keller/KELLER – uneducated man, works hard to communicate, used to work in a machine shop, nearing sixty, a heavy man and he is not creative.
- Dr. Jim Bayliss/JIM – nearly forty, wry, self-controlled man, an easy talker (friendly), makes jokes about himself, educated man and there is something sad about him.
- Frank Lubey/FRANK – he is thirty two, he is balding, he has strong opinions, uncertain of himself and angry lot of times (but want it in a pleasant and neighborly way).
- Larry – went missing on November twenty-fifth and was a pilot who his airplane crashed.
- Kate/MOTHER – Larry and Chris Keller/CHRIS's mother, Joe Keller/KELLER's wife and even though Larry is missing for 3 years she still has hope that he is alive.
- Ann – was away from the house (Jim's house) she grew up in with her family, she was Larry's girlfriend, she was very thick and now she is a beautiful woman.
- Sue – rounding forty, she is Jim's wife, she is overweight and she fears it.
- Lydia Lubey/LYDIA – Frank's wife.
- Chris Keller/CHRIS – Joe Keller/KELLER's and Kate/MOTHER's son, was a solider and wants to be married with Annie.
The tree
Larry is dead (because it says "he'd") and Kate is supposed to say something about it so Kate is probably Larry's mother and the tree was probably planted by Larry.
What we learn about Keller's family and attitude to the war
We learn that Keller's son is dead and that it is because of the war.
Keller's attitude to the war is that it tears families apart and that it’s a bad thing and he thinks that lot of people thinks the same thing.
Two questions:
Chris says "we've made a terrible mistake." (line 14, page 19) what is the mistake?
The mistake is being dishonest with Kate/MOTHER about that they made her believe that Larry is coming back. They are giving her hope even though they don’t have any hope anymore.
What does Chris wish to do about it? Why?
Chris wants to tell Kate/MOTHER that there is no hope that Larry is coming back and that the believe that Larry is coming back doesn’t do any good to her or to the other people of the family.
The dream:
Kate/MOTHER had a dream about Larry. In the dream she saw him flying an airplane (what shows us that he was a US pilot) and his airplane started to fall. Larry was calling Mom! And then she went out and Larry's tree fell in front of her.
Questions:
Why does Keller lie to mother about Chris\Annie?
Keller lie to mother about Chris/Annie because when he is about to be in a situation he doesn’t want to be in he prefer lying than telling the truth.
Describe Mother's reaction to the game why do you think she reacts this way? What does it reveal about her?
I think that because of how we see she reacts to everything earlier the fact that Larry isn’t coming back (when she sayed she will kill herself) and now she is shaking and furious because of a game it all points that she is mentally sick.
Questions:
From what we have just read, what did we learn about:
- Anne's parents
- Anne's beliefs in relation to Larry – and her character
- The reasons for Mother's unbreakable belief
- We learn that Anne's father is in jail and that Anne's mother wanted to divorce Anne's dad (and maybe she still wants to).
- We learn that Anne's beliefs in relation to Larry is that Larry is not coming back.
- We learn that Mother's unbreakable belief is there because she has strong mother instinct and because there are people that still come back.
Questions:
- Explain what happened in the factory using Keller's version of events. According to Keller, why did Anne's father do it?
- Why does Chris feel embarrassed/ashamed/guilty with Ann – explain in relation to the war.
- What happened in the factory was that there was to much pressure on Anne's father and he was afraid of the army and from Keller so he accidentally made a broken part for the airplanes and he tried to fix it by himself and he didn’t succeed
- Chris feels ashamed with Ann because he was a commander in the war and he lost all of the soldiers he was in charge of so he doesn’t know why he deserve to be alive and happy if all of them are dead.
Notes in the play:
- Page 35 lines 8 to 19.
- Page 44 line 18 to page 45 line 15.
- Page 59 lines 9 to 12.
The tests:
December 15 – AMS
January 12th – module E – 2 – list B
Act 1 ending:
Act 1 ends when KELLER is nervus because GEORGE (ANN's brother) is coming with excitement and he has information.
Pages 54-55, 7-11:
- Because she is probably trying to get information to release her father from prison even if it means that KELLER is going to prison.
- Because KELLER and Steve were partners so if he calls Steve a murderer he basically calls himself a murderer.
- We learn about Chris's values from what he says about the war that he can't proceed in his life because other people (that was under his responsibility) died. Chris's values differ from the other people who didn’t fight in the war by that everyone looks at the war like "a bus crash" like people died and now we need to go on with our lives while Chris's opinion says that the war was the hardest thing the human race has been through so everyone needs grief about everyone who died in the war.
- I think that Miller tries to change the audience's values so they will not be the same which means that Miller tries to show people themselves.
- One example is that Kate tries to convince Ann to believe with her that Larry is still alive.
Questions:
- What favour does Sue ask from Ann? Why?
- What is Sue accusing Chris of?
- What does Sue tell Ann about the neighbors attitude to Keller and the court case?
- Sue asks Ann to move away after she and Chris will get married because Chris make people be the best version of themselves and it means Jim will lose money if Chris will stay.
- Sue is accusing Chris of being a hypocrite because he is trying to make people better when he himself take money from a business that did crimes.
- Sue tells Ann that the neighbors think that Keller is a bad man too because he killed those 21 pilots and he tricked his way out of prison.
Questions:
- How does Steve's version of events differ from Keller's?
- How does George try to defend his father?
i) relate to Keller's behaviour as a boss.
ii) Steven's personality. - What offer does Keller make to George and then to Steve? Why?
- Steve's version of events differ from Keller's by Steven telling that he called Keller to tell him about the broken parts Keller talled him to sell it anyway. While Keller's version of events is saying that Steve didn’t talk to George because he was afraid.
- I) he says that Keller is checking twice if the factory lights are off at the end of the day and that Keller knows how much time his workers are in the toilet.
II) He also sayed that Steven is not buying shirts without someone with him to tell him what to do so he wouldn’t sell the parts without Keller telling him to. - Keller offers George a job as a layer (because he wants that when Steve get out of jail he won't live with Ann and Chris. He wants him to live with George) around their house and he offers Steve a job in his factory (because he want to keep Steve close to him. Theres a saying that says "keep your friends close and your enemies closer").
Question I have left after reading the play:
Will Steve be released?
Questions:
- What does Keller finally understand?
- How does this differ from his attitude throughout the play?
- Why does he shoot himself? Support your answer with evidence from the play.
- Keller finally understand that it doesn’t matter if its his son or not they are all people who lived.
- This differs from his attitude throughout the play by that throughout the play he acted like the only thing that matters is his family and now he understands that all lives are lives and not only his family's.
- He shoot himself because he understood he killed 22 lives (including Larry's) and now he understands they are all living people.
